The Cost of Love

The Cost of Love

Valentine’s day is one of the most romantic holidays: giving gifts to significant others,
spending hundreds on jewels, chocolate, and flowers, but what does the student body think
about this holiday?
“While Valentine’s day is a pretty, aesthetically pleasing holiday. The concept is just
horrible” according to a participant of a Valkyrie survey. Valentine’s day feeds into conditional
love, giving gifts to show how much you love someone.
On the report of a Valkyrie survey, students believe that Valentine’s day’s meaning has
been stripped away, and has become a marketing scheme.
Valentine’s day is one of the most commercialized holidays in the US with Americans
spending roughly 21.8 billion dollars in 2021, with on average 164.76 per consumer. The
pandemic dropped Valentine’s day prices to around 32 dollars per person, but the prices are still
very high.
The pressure to get your significant other a gift was implemented by companies profiting
off of the average consumer. “You’re supposed to show your love to the people you love every
day of the year, Valentine’s day isn’t special.” says a student from WSHS.
According to a Valkyrie survey, 60% of people said that they won’t celebrate the holiday
and 40% will celebrate the holiday. Nobody said that they absolutely hate the holiday, while
nobody said that they absolutely love the holiday.

While valentines day has its cons, it’s still a fun and pretty holiday to celebrate love.
Happy Valentine’s day WSHS!
