XC Boys Are Taking Out Their Running Shoes
September 29, 2022
Boys Cross Country has many young returners this season. They are aiming for the regional titles and this year and states. In order to be competitive, the Cross-Country team believes the right mindset and a good team relationship will help them to become Champions.
There is always a lot of competition to be the top guys! ‘’improve due to their grit and determination only feeds the team’s ambition’’ says Coach McCarthy. Jaiden Lockhart(sr), Hayden Goodman (so), Owen Renquist (so), Nate McMahon (jr), James Yoho (sr), and Collin Keehan (so) are the top guys on the team. They have put in a lot of miles this summer and will continue to as the season goes on. Owen Rehnquist agrees and adds, ‘’It was crucial to our season to commit to the preseason.”
‘’Mentality is very important as a runner’’ Owen says. The team may be physically exhausted, and their legs may be hurting but they can still win if they are mentally stronger than the other runners. Jaiden Lockhart says, ‘’We race so mentally strong it doesn’t even matter’’. Runners need to have a good mentality. Overall, a good mentality can give you the energy to power through those 3 miles!
The boy’s cross-country team had a big race two weekends ago. They beat a lot of their time! It was a relay race, so they had to work together, and each had to do their own part. Coach McCarthy says ‘’That 3.1-mile race can be grueling, and while many people believe cross-country is an individual sport, every athlete runs better as a team when their fellow Vikings are toeing the line with them.’’ Jaden Lockhart goes on to say, ‘’I prefer running with my teammates because that is what brings success.’’
The Cross-country team ran at Oatlands in London County this past weekend. The boys’ team looked great, almost all the runners that ran got a PR. PR in the cross country stands for a personal best or personal record. The Junior Varsity was 5th overall, and the Varsity boys got 16th place. The Oatlands Invitational is a big meet with 40 teams racing and over 1,000 people racing.
