Facing the Impact: Concussions in Sports
Concussions are a worry for every athlete and can produce life-altering circumstances, but what is the true impact?
The proper definition of concussions is temporary unconsciousness or confusion as a result of a blow to the head, but there is much more. Many athletes are affected every day by concussions. They are commonly seen in contact sports such as soccer and football. Faith Oh, center back for the girls’ varsity soccer team, has faced many concussions as a result of physicality. She states concussions have “taken a toll” on her both mentally and physically.
The physical toll of concussions is obvious. Rest and removing various activities from your life for recovery. They can cause life-altering effects to the brain such as: memory problems, sensitivity to noise, light, sound, trouble concentrating, and CTE. Concussions harm the brain and daily life in many ways. Not being able to do average tasks is one of many examples. An athlete’s normal everyday life is taken away in an instant.
The results of the physical toll produce a mental toll on the athlete almost every time. Recovery from concussions is demanding and makes the athlete feel distanced from reality. Watching their team play the sport they long for and the passion and love for a sport taken away is what takes the toll. To solve this, athletes are often seen rushing back to their sport and doing further damage. This leads to even more time out and more built-up troubles.
Concussions’ toll on an athlete is severely underestimated and should be taken much more seriously. If a concussion is suspected, avoid further damage, and think about your future.
