The Girls Varsity Soccer Team Starts the 22-23 Season with Growth and Passion

The Viking Girls’ Varsity Soccer team (WGVS) is looking forward to a great season filled with growth, both on and off the field.

Former Assistant Coach, Lauryn Laslie steps up to the head coach position. She leads the team with Karla Hernandez, who takes on the role of Assistant Coach. Both coaches have a lot to bring to the table, especially being graduates of the WGVS program. Coach Laslie says that her goals for this season are to “make high school soccer fun” and “help the team find success.”

For the 22-23 season, the team is captained by Senior Ella Pickup and Junior Saige Berta. Both have been on the varsity team since their freshman year. Saige Berta says she hopes to “lead WGVS to as many wins as possible,” this season. Both captains are well respected by their teammates.

The team is always working to better their strengths and areas to improve. A strength of the team is their willingness to back each other up without a second thought. Coach Laslie says this close bond is “something you can’t coach” and is a great strength to have. Both Coach Laslie and Saige Berta say that communication on the field is something that could always improve. Communication is key in the game to find the most success and create the best team chemistry.

Their season started strong after a 4-0 win in their first scrimmage over Stafford High School. Being competitive in the district, the team is hoping to advance to regionals and find success. The WGVS team’s biggest competition this season is Colgan. The Sharks have a powerhouse soccer program, but the Vikings always put up a good fight.

The WGVS team have a great season ahead of them, so make sure to show out to their games and support.
