There are many ways of obtaining and spreading information in society. From the invention of the Gutenberg Printing Press in the mid-15th century to social media in the 90s, these methods have drastically changed. Even with this change, all these methods are or have been used to help form people’s opinions. However, it remains uncertain whether these opinions and their sources are genuinely original or the echoes of others.
Opinions are vital to a working society. They influence politics, relationships, education, information, and more. They also influence news, which spreads information and eventually feeds many more opinions. Even the supposedly ‘unbiased’ news is heavily influenced by opinionated statements, so it’s even more critical that society’s views and thoughts are not stuck in a loop.
Different types of opinions are formed in various ways. For example, political opinions can be influenced through government propaganda and news channels. In contrast, fashion opinions may be influenced by magazines, fashion shows, and celebrities. Similarly, scientific opinions are often shaped by peer-reviewed research and academic journals. At the same time, sacred texts and religious leaders may influence religious views.
When asked about his opinions being his own, economics teacher Mr. Hebert responded with a question of his own, “Are we even our own? Or are we just a product of something else?” He further explained that everything is always based on something else, emphasizing “always.”
Recent WSHS graduate Naz R explained how research is vital to his thoughts. He exemplified this in his response, “If it’s a large topic that I care about, I’ll do some research and put some time into it, but smaller things that I don’t worry about, I won’t even look at twice.”
Before forming an opinion, these are some things to think about doing:
- Take the time to do research.
- Do not use a single source; use multiple.
- Verify any sources and fact-check any supporting details of the opinion.
After taking these three actions, you will find it much easier to form original thoughts and even argue and change the ones of those around you. Before you advertise your thoughts and opinions, though, always ensure you have a way to ascertain that they are your own; after all, you don’t want to be accused of being a broken record, right?
