In February, love for books was flowing through the air at Woodbridge High School. Old Bridge Elementary students marched into Woodbridge in a dizzying array of colors and costumes, planned meticulously for this day.
This event took place for “National Read Across America Day,” where elementary students shared their passion for reading on Dr. Seuss’ birthday throughout the United States. This year, it was done on Friday, February 28th rather than March 2nd, but the spirit of Dr. Seuss continued to live on through the books they were reading and the love of books they were beginning to develop with it. Woodbridge High School students led the parade with pom-poms and cheer, and the elementary students followed close behind, exhibiting costumes of Harry Potter, Squid Game, Rock Paper Scissors, and even Bluey! Each costume was paired with a book in hand that told the stories of the characters they exhibited and, through it, a budding passion for exploring books in the future. This passion is apparent in the seedling of a legacy this leaves on the youth, who are beginning to feel a love for reading; “I didn’t read before, but now, the words are a world for me. I think it’s because of [Read Across America Day,] and I love it!”
