Girls Basketball On The Road To Success

The girls Varsity Basketball season has had a great start to their season, with a 1-2 record. The lady Vikings are ready to go on a winning streak.

New head coach Mark Hines says, “I am very excited about our potential and where  the season could go”. Coach Heins is not the only one excited about this season, Amani Melendez, a Senior on the team, says that, “even though it’s bittersweet, I am ready to lead the team this year and I’m excited to leave my mark on this program. With many amazing seniors leaving this year, many underclassmen are ready to step up to the plate and fill the shoes the seniors are leaving behind. Junior, Tytianah Smith says she “enjoys the teachable lessons from the seniors” and how it prepares her for next year. It gives her many leadership skills that she can obtain and pass along.

Even with a drastic coach switch, coach Hines had great intentions with becoming  the head coach at Woodbridge. Hines stated, “I have always wanted to have my own program and I am already able to call Woodbridge home, so it was a perfect fit.”

Mackenzie Burke, a lady Viking and Senior on the team, has been here since her Freshman year. She was used to her former coach but she is grateful for coach Heins picking up this team and giving them a great jump start to this season. He continues to give heart and dedication when running practices even when he wasn’t given the position yet.

With many goals this season, the lady Vikings would like a repeat of the 2019 season of winning the state championship. To achieve this, they need to come together as one. When the team felt separated, Junior, Judy Elgendi says, “the way I bring light to  certain situations is laughter, and we all love a good laugh on this team”. With fantastic  coaches, seniors, and underclassmen, they are more than confident that they can  achieve this goal!
