History & Heartbreak

Why do we celebrate Valentine’s Day? Most people know this as a day of love and celebration, but the history behind it is tragic and discreet. In the 3rd Century A.D, King Claudius II banned all marriages due to his lovesick soldiers. This was during the Reign of Terror. There were around 12-14 saints conducting secret marriages. Several saints named St. Valentine were executed on February 14th. This is why we celebrate Valentine’s Day on the 14th of February.

Why do so many couples break up around Valentine’s Day? When this holiday comes around there are many expectations. What do you think you are going to buy? What will you get your partner? This may put some people under pressure and stress. School counselor Audrey Vasquez-Rivera says around this time there is lots of excitement and emotions. Students often confide in her with their relationships. Overall, Valentine’s Day is a celebration of love and hopefully that can be spread with everyone.
