As the volleyball season begins, the players are ready to prove themselves. They begin their season with multiple wins. To add to that they are pushing to be better than ever.
This season, Head Coach Richard Habina believes he has a solid team. He has a new approach to the season starting off with “the mentality of the team.” He says that the team’s motto for the season is, “earned never given.”
Coach Habina also believes that the “girls should have their own goals” going into the season. With the players having their personal goals it makes the coach’s goals easier to attain. His goals mainly consisting of being able to build up a team that can get into the higher levels of volleyball.
Overall, Habina believes that the team’s strongest players would be the two captains, Clara Freeman and two-time captain Kylie Barbier. Although, he states that “everyone on the team has their strengths,” the two captains stick out as great players and leaders of the team.
With multiple wins this season and the extraordinary leadership of captains, the team is doing all they can to get what they deserve, which they have been working hard for.
One of the girls that forms part of the team, Junior, Edria Quansah said, “I worked on my skills outside, assisted to clinics and I also came to both conditionings, after school and during summer.” These girls put so much of their time and energy because volleyball is everything for them. And because of this they can be the best players possible and grow as athletes. Further, gives them reason to be varsity athletes.
Some people think volleyball is a physical sport and others might think it’s a mental sport but “anyone is physically capable enough to learn how to play volleyball,” said Edria but the hardest part is to “learn how to stay out of your head,” she states.
Edria as a middle-blocker states, “I really like getting blocks and kills, it feels really good when in games I get a kill, or I block someone else and people start cheering.” A kill being when you hit/spike/ attack the ball to the other side of the court and the other team is unable to get it back up.
The Vikings volleyball team takes grand steps into the season coming out strong and ready to play. The season is only at its beginning, but the ladies are pushing forward and breaking barriers better than ever!
