Although an individual sport, Woodbridge Golf is a team full of community and commitment. Many players on the team hit the green out of season. “I played courses casually over the summer to work on different aspects of my game” said junior captain Braylen Calhoun.
With golf growth is partially dependent on the athlete. “Golf is expensive and can be hard to access at times” Coach Housten explained. Athletes have to have their own equipment. Despite this expense Coach Housten gave praise to the schools in PWCS and to the golf courses for allowing/ encouraging players to golf for free. “To learn this game and to grow for free is a privilege.”
When asked about the team chemistry, Junior Bruce Bennard said that “everyone’s friends, golf is a social game.” Calhoun added to this saying “golf is like playing table games with friends.” The team is full of laughs and friendship. Some golfers also play for our baseball team. This is partially why the team meshes so well with each other. The team is always talking, there’s never a dull moment.
When asked about the mental side of golf Bennard said “Golf is 90% mentality; you have to take it one shot at a time” . Although a change of scenery from course to course is “always a plus” says Calhoun. He spoke about the change in course acting as a sort of refreshment for golfers. Golf can be frustrating but being in “nature” can help to calm a player down after a bad shot.
Coach Housten is and has been very focused on team building, “human building” as he put it. Growing through golf is easy. “We’re encouraging that etiquette and respect” When players walk off the green Coach Housten wants them to be better people.
Golf is a team full of laughs and love. They’re going to come back even stronger next season!
