Let’s C-H-E-E-R Them On!
The cheer team starts strong, ready to battle for the 2023 District championship title!
Varsity Head coach Amanda Frase believes they have a fresh start due to the many newcomers on the team. This makes them ready to take on the new season!
In 2022, 14 seniors graduated, taking a chunk out of their team. But as Coach Frase stated, “The new members are younger, so a lot are staying for 2-4 years depending on age group”. This shows how the team’s rebuilding itself with athletes that have high potential.
Both sideline cheer and competition cheer have a hectic schedule this upcoming October. Coach Frase said, “Virginia cheer hit the ground running and crammed everything in”. Although their schedule is tight, it helps them improve on their strengths for the post season! Their goal is to qualify for The VHSL State Cheer Championships.
The cheer team being a great game day team is due to the team’s strengths in addition to the communication going on within. Athlete Maddie Williams, a captain of varsity goes on to say, “we are always laughing and having fun, we love seeing each other at practice.” The bond in the team is strong, which makes the competition more enjoyable. This season everyone on the team is working hard to get new tumbling skills. But they’re also working hard to gain new skills instead of deciding to settle for what they already have.
Senior Captains Annie Roca and Maddie Williams and Junior Laila Thomas say they will surpass the expectations this season because of the hard work the team is putting into their routines. They’re mainly excited to show their improvements and see themselves develop throughout the season! Coach Frase also says, “Our team is very well-rounded and are currently fine-tuning their skills.”
Overall, the cheer team has a great start to the season! Let’s cheer them on this October as well as enjoy their awesome routines! Be sure to come to their upcoming game on Friday, October 13th as well as their championship events in the coming weeks!
