There’s no other high school sport like wrestling, despite being an individual sport, a group of determined young athletes on the Woodbridge Wrestling team support each other and enjoy their sport to the fullest. Many wrestlers are performing admirably, showing wonderful skills and their passion for the sport.
The boys assure that they can dedicate themselves to their sport and school at the same time. They balance their academics and wrestling commitments using their time wisely “by working in advisory and doing all my schoolwork during school hours,” said Ethan Salayon.
Their commitment to continuous improvement is evident in their outstanding performances during matches. While wrestling may be an individual sport, varsity wrestling understands the importance of teamwork. They support and motivate each other, both on and off the mat, creating a strong sense of unity within the team.
Head Coach Alexander Stanley believes he has a solid team that is made up of gifted wrestlers. The boys grow every day in their sport from grueling conditioning sessions to technical drills, these athletes push their limits to build strength, agility, and endurance. Under the guidance of their skilled coaches, they hone their technique, master various wrestling moves, and develop strategic thinking on the mat. Coach Stanley states “we want to have fun, but we also like to point at where the end goal is and be successful.”
The Woodbridge High School wrestling varsity team consistently competes against the toughest opponents in the region. Not only does their dedication and hard work pay off, but also the way they prepare themselves mentally as they achieve impressive results in tournaments. One of the wrestlers, Sean Goffigan said, “being confident in my preparation and all the practice that I’ve done.” With each victory, they prove their ability and solidify their reputation as a formidable force in the wrestling community.
Wrestling is a physically demanding sport that requires a unique set of skills and techniques that are easier to pick up and learn, but “at the end of the day its more important for the right mindset and attitude to be successful rather than any specific technique,” Stanley states.
The Vikings boys wrestling team embodies the true spirit of athleticism, determination, and sportsmanship. The season just started, but the boys are already putting unwavering commitment and remarkable skill and teamwork!
