The Woodbridge Boys lacrosse team has been seen as underdogs but now, with new leadership and new talent the team hopes to snatch a place in the battle for a district title.
Senior Captain Ethan Gibb says that if they want the district title they need to “close the gaps in the defense” that “often get exploited by other teams.” Although Gibb and the other captains agree that there’s an untapped area of new talent on the team.
When asked about team chemistry, senior captain James Williams said that the team, and the people on it are what make playing lacrosse “worth it”, and the glory of scoring goals that is. Williams added that he thinks Woodbridge always “wants it more than everybody else”.
Gibb shares the sentiment saying that the team appears as “underdogs” and that they “always come back stronger”, Especially after halftime. He adds that he’s “excited to see” what the team does against Forest Park and Colgan.
Senior Captain Bryce Ford says a strength of the team is the “heavy shooters” they have on offense “as well as the close defense”. Head coach Dilly agrees adding that a strength of theirs is “the returning 4/6 offensive players”. Dilly hopes to win the district championship and return to regionals this season.
Each captain expressed their hopes and confidence in beating their opponents Forest Park and Colgan in the district games this season, especially Junior Captain Michael Bertrand. Bertrand plays long stick middie or LSM and says he loves it. He expressed his fondness for the ability to go anywhere on the field and not worry about restraining lines. Bertrand says that this is their year to win it all, and new talent and their solid offense can get them there.
Captain James Williams explained why he’s so excited to be a captain this season. He says he’s “always felt like a leader of this team” and that he always tries to be a good role model for younger players. Gibb shares the excitement for the role and adds that he feels “respected by coaches and teammates”.
