Over at Woodbridge Senior High School, the band operates like a close-knit team, working together with great ambition. Even though most of the members are new this year, the 2023 Mighty Vikings Marching Band confidently pushes forward. 

The drum major, Alex Porter, mentions that even with many fresh faces, the band gets along well. Band director Ms. Matalavage believes the new students have great potential, noting that they practice hard every day. She is known for her kindness and is always ready to help anyone in the band. 

Sophomore Dibrell Alston mentions, “Ms. Matalavage not only assists us with instruments but also guides us in mastering our musical notes. Being in the band is amazing.” Dibrell also notes their inclusive community and how they are always there to support each other if anyone is feeling down. 

There’s exciting news for the band – the drum major, Alex Porter, composed a song called “The Raging Storm,” and Ms. Matalavage liked it so much that she is allowing the band to perform it at future events. According to other students, it is a catchy and easy tune. 

Recently, the marching band played during the school’s pep rally on Friday the 13th, playing during short segments during the event. The band is now preparing for its largest event, VBODA, taking place in November. Last year they received nearly all perfect scores in all areas. They are working hard to ensure its success and eagerly anticipating the opportunity to display their talent!
