Veterans Day: A Celebration of Those Who have Served

Veterans Day: A Celebration of Those Who have Served

Today is Veterans Day, a holiday honoring Veterans of the US Armed Forces.

Veterans Day was established on June 1st, 1954. Originally called Armistice Day, this day of celebration was proclaimed by President Wilson as the first commemoration of that day. People celebrate Veterans Day by visiting monuments in Washington D.C. or attending ceremonies at the Veteran Association’s National Cemetery.

History Teacher, Eritt Sinkko, joined the Navy in 1985 and served in Norfolk, Virginia. He says that the military gave him opportunities like “getting his degree” which allowed him to become a teacher. Sinkko also took a lot away from the experience. “I would say the big things would be attention to detail and organization, which helps me do this job” He also adds that he got to experience “a lot of different places and people” Sinkko says that “joining the military is a good opportunity” if you do not know what to do after high school.

Veterans do an amazing job serving our country. If you are interested in learning more, there are plenty of Veterans in our school you can talk to. Happy Veterans Day!
