TikTok is a convenient app when you have lots of time to waste and nothing else to do. The app provides enjoyable content that can make a dull moment worthwhile, with some content even including educational facts as well. Though, the addicting app has gotten out of hand.

Since the app boasts an “endless stream” of material, causing teens to likely spend a lengthy time in the app and possibly even become addicted to watching the videos for hours at a time. If the app does get too distracting, you’ll start to prioritize the time taken on the app instead of other objectives that are more important or valuable. Garrett Harnad (11th grade) spends about “five to six” hours scrolling on TikTok daily, meanwhile Madi Booth (11th grade) only spends “around two” hours daily due to her recent decision of distancing herself from the app.

Although, the controversial app can also be beneficial to students as it encourages us to improve our self-esteem by practicing our pronunciation and speaking skills in front of the camera. This can be useful especially during school, college, and work presentations. TikTok has become a platform for thousands of healthcare professionals, including psychiatrists, therapists, and mental health advocates. They use the app’s widespread reach to talk to audiences about everything from depression to ADHD. This offers validation and comfortability in the audience due to the discussion of these serious topics.

It is completely up to you to decide if TikTok is the right place for you and whether it deserves a fragment of your life. Therefore, if you do decide to use it, it is recommended to keep track of your usage time and how you are letting it affect you. Always remember, balance is key.
